Practical Projects

Some of the projects carried out to date have been :-

Benefit Up-take and Money Management Project, which created greater awareness of the services available to help and support local people experiencing financial difficulties.

Paediatric Over To You Programme was designed as a pilot project to provide a multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of childhood obesity, with core working partners including Daisy Hill Hospital’s Dietetics and Physiotherapy departments, and Newry Sports Centre. The concept of the programme was to provide individual Physiotherapy and Dietetics assessments pre and post programme, provide a course of group based activity sessions in Newry Sports Centre as well as providing support, motivation and education regarding dietary, physical activity and lifestyle change.

Pharmaceutical Awareness Seminar delivered by Pat Kane from CITA targeted at 50 volunteers and staff members from the voluntary and community sector. Evaluations were very positive and demonstrated that the training was very informative and necessary.

Purchase of Trampolines and Hoist for Newry and Kilkeel Sports Centre required to facilitate Rebound Therapy for people in the district who have severe disabilities.

Appointment of BME Advice and Support worker to assist migrants arriving to the Newry and Mourne area.

Pharmaceutical Awareness Seminar delivered by Pam Armstrong in January 2006, targeted 35 volunteers and staff members from the voluntary and community sector. Evaluations were very positive and demonstrated that the training was very informative and necessary.

Women’s Well-Fit Program, aimed primarily at the 18-35 year old age group, who are not getting sufficient exercise as a result of their domestic/caring responsibilities, ran simultaneously in Kilkeel Leisure Centre and Newry Sports Centre. The sessions were two hours in duration, twice weekly, and in Newry, consisted of Gym Training, Spinning, Circuits and Swiss Ball activities. In Kilkeel Leisure Centre, the instructors offered Gym Training, Aqua-aerobics, Circuits and Power Bands. Both Centres offered participants nutritional education and guidance, devised personal training programs and encouraged health enhancing activities outside of the sessions to improve health outcomes of participants.
